Update on Upper Buller Gorge – highway likely to continue to be closed most of today
The NZ Transport Agency is continuing to make an area of the Upper Buller Gorge, SH6, between the Iron Bridge near Inangahua and Murchison, safe for road users today. The highway is likely to be closed to traffic until the late afternoon at the earliest.
The highway was closed all of Monday after a weekend of heavy rain and a subsequent slip blocked both lanes and caused a driver to crash in the early hours of the morning. He was uninjured.
“The Agency’s contractors are continuing to make the site safe by sluicing and scaling the rock face using abseilers today,” says Margarita Gonzalez-Borrero, Transport Agency Maintenance Contract Manager.
“We are aiming to get a lane safely open as soon as we can and will update the highway’s status at 4 pm,” she says.
· The detour route while the highway is closed is via Springs Junction and Reefton.
