Update – Waioeka Gorge to remain closed due to bad weather
The NZ Transport Agency is urging motorists to stay up to date with road conditions between Opotiki and
Gisborne (SH2) as heavy rain has meant the Waioeka Gorge will remain closed overnight as a safety precaution.
Transport Agency Regional Transport System Manager, Rob Campbell asks those travelling to check the Transport Agency’s Journey Planner website, www.journeys.nzta.govt.nz, or ring 0800 44 44 49 to stay up to date with the latest conditions.
“Safety is our top priority, and until the geotechnical engineers are happy with the stability of the slip site we will keep the road closed,” says Mr Campbell.
The NZ Transport Agency is monitoring the weather forecast closely, and will announce any changes to road access with as much warning as possible. The road is likely to re-open again tomorrow after midday.
We apologise to motorists for the distruption this has caused and we continue to assure those affected we are working hard to safely re-open the gorge as soon as possible.
