UPDATE: Waioeka Gorge SH2 Bay of Plenty to remain closed
27 June 2018
The NZ Transport Agency is advising
that SH2 through the Waioeka Gorge will remain closed as
contractors continue working to clear a significant slip
located between Oponae (Waiata Rd) and Wairata (Wairata
Rd).
This means road users travelling between Gisborne and Opotiki will need to use an alternative route and allow extra time for their journeys.
NZTA Regional Transport Systems Manager Rob Campbell says contractors are making good progress clearing the material that came down with the slip with the bulk of it already removed.
“We have a helicopter sluicing the area today and tomorrow which will help clear the remaining unstable rocks quickly and effectively.
“However, what is currently unknown is how much more loose material remains above the road, and whether or not more rocks might come down. If significantly more rocks do come down, or the remaining rocks are considered too unstable to open the road safely, it could extend the closure duration.
“Once the sluicing is complete we will have a much clearer idea of when we will be able to safely re-open to motorists.”
The NZ Transport Agency thanks road users for their understanding and patience.
“Following on from the recent floods in Gisborne we understand the impact on the region of this vital route being closed. Our contractors are working as hard as they can to get the job done so we can safely re-open the road as soon as possible,” says Mr Campbell.
The Transport Agency will continue to provide updates via social media and the NZTA website. A detailed update will be provided on Friday afternoon.
If travelling, motorists are asked to use SH5 or SH35 as an alternative route. Please plan your journey and be aware these alternative routes will add significant time to your trip.
