The Socialist Equality Group (NZ) is holding a public meeting to discuss the immense danger facing WikiLeaks founder
Julian Assange and the global campaign to demand his freedom and security.
Assange has spent more than six years in the Ecuadorian embassy, where he sought asylum to avoid being extradited and
tried in the US. Now the Ecuadorian government, under immense pressure from the Trump administration, has cut off
Assange's communications and is indicating that it may hand him over to British authorities.
The attack on WikiLeaks and Assange is an attack on freedom of speech and on journalism. Assange has committed no crime.
He is in danger because WikiLeaks has revealed the crimes of US imperialism in Iraq, Afghanistan and throughout the
world, and the actions of US allies including New Zealand, which have been hidden from the population.
Along with the attack on WikiLeaks, the US government and corporations such as Google and Facebook are seeking to
restrict access to socialist, left-wing and anti-war viewpoints online. The censorship of the internet and assault on
free speech are part of preparations for war and repression of the working class.
Protests have been held in Sydney, throughout Australia and internationally, including in London and in New Zealand, to
demand that Assange's democratic rights and freedoms be upheld by the Australian, British and Ecuadorian governments.
We call on workers, young people and anyone who defends democratic rights to attend this meeting in Lower Hutt and join
the international fight to defend Assange and end internet censorship.
