UPDATE: Waioeka Gorge SH2 to remain closed
The NZ Transport Agency is advising SH2 Waioeka Gorge will remain closed until further notice due to a significant slip located between Oponae (Waiata Rd) and Wairata (Wairata Rd).
This means road users travelling between Gisborne and Opotiki will need to use an alternative route.
“Contractors will be working as hard as they can to get the job done as soon as possible, but we need to ensure the men and women on site are safe as the area remains unstable and progress will depend on weather and further rock fall,” says NZ Transport Agency Systems Manager Rob Campbell
Until further assessments have been completed it is too early to predict when the road will be able to be safely re-opened to traffic.
We will continue to provide updates via social media and the NZTA website.
If travelling motorists are asked to use SH5 or SH35 as an alternative route. Please plan your journey and be aware these alternative routes will add significant time to your trip.
The NZ Transport Agency thanks road users for their understanding and patience.
