Governor of Pitcairn Documents Her First Visit
With 51 inhabitants, Pitcairn Island is one of the smallest and most remote territories on Earth. Its Governor Laura
Clarke paid her first visit in May 2018 – and shot a short film documenting her experience.
The short film is a rare glimpse into life on the small island – featuring interviews with the Mayor, the Post Master
and other key figures in the small community.
The journey to the Islands, made up of Pitcairn and the uninhabited Henderson, Ducie and Oneo Islands is not a straight
forward one. A flight from Wellington to Auckland, another to Tahiti, and a further flight to Mangareva in French
Polynesia before boarding a slow-boat called the Claymore II for 36 hours.
“I wanted to document this fascinating journey – one of the great journeys of old. My experience was one of a
breathtakingly beautiful island with opportunities and challenges in equal measure.”
Governor of Pitcairn Laura Clarke said.
“The future of the Island remains uncertain – but I hope that together the people of Pitcairn can secure its long term
future. The world would be diminished without it.”
One of the opportunities for the island is the increasing production of honey – available online to New Zealand customers as well as highly collectable stamps.
