Limited play on city sports fields this weekend
Sporting codes are revising their match schedule for this weekend after another week of wet weather.
Senior leaders from Canterbury Rugby Union, Canterbury Rugby League and Mainland Football have been working with Christchurch City Council staff on plans for minimising play on the fields because of their sodden condition.
“We have had almost as much rain so far this year as we had all of last year and the fields are saturated so it is going to be a very challenging season,’’ says Christchurch City Council Head of Parks Andrew Rutledge.
“We made the decision last week to limit play on the fields and unfortunately we need to do the same again this weekend.’’
Mainland Football Chief Executive Julian Bowden says the sporting codes are looking closely at how they can manage the scheduling of their matches for the rest of the season so they can get as much play in as possible, taking into account the condition of the fields.
The decision on what games are played this weekend are being made by the individual codes. Players should check their association’s website if they are uncertain if their match is going ahead.
