St Johns Hill School retains top Enviroschools status

Tuesday, 12 June 2018

Horizons Regional Council will be helping St Johns Hill School to celebrate retaining their Green Gold status for the Enviroschools programme, which is the highest achievable status, on Friday 15 June.

Horizons regional coordinator for Enviroschools Sarah Galley says retaining this status is an impressive achievement as it reflects how well St Johns Hill School have done to embed the Enviroschools programme into all aspects of the school.

“It’s really wonderful to see schools such as St Johns Hill really own their commitment to the Enviroschools programme and continue to influence the next generation to be sustainably minded.

“St Johns Hill School has been a Green Gold Enviroschool since 2009. Last month, school stakeholders and special guests came together to reflect on their Green Gold status and Enviroschools journey. This review included all the projects and initiatives the school has been doing over the last few years.”

“The Enviroschools programme aims to foster a generation of people who instinctively think and act sustainably, so in the years to come looking after our environment and being sustainable in their actions will be second nature to them.”

St Johns Hill School acting principal Kevin Booth is delighted the school has retained its Green Gold status, and is looking forward to being able to share the sustainable actions the children have been undertaking with guests on Friday.

“We’ve invited Councillors from both Horizons and Whanganui District Council to the celebration which will begin with a pōwhiri, followed by an assembly and presentation of certificates.

“At the conclusion of the assembly, guests will be taken on a guided tour of the school to see what gives us the Green Gold tick of approval. Throughout the day children and teachers will be involved in a wide range of activities promoting sustainable actions such as tree planting, cooking kumara harvested from the school’s gardens, making jute carry bags and wax lunch wraps.

“We are also very grateful to Beaver Tree Service for assisting us in our endeavour for every pupil to plant a tree in celebration of both Arbour Day and World Environment Day which were held June 5.”
