Weekend Weather Improves

Published: Thu 7 Jun 2018 02:12 PM
Following a blast of cold, southerly air over the country, MetService is predicting that the coming weekend will welcome us with some fine weather.
Southerly winds have dominated the week’s weather with winter coats out in force. Luckily, a high-pressure system begins to set in over the country this weekend, easing the cold southerly winds and bringing more pleasant weather for many. However, this doesn’t mean a warmer start to the weekend with Saturday prone to a particularly cold morning.
“As the high-pressure establishes itself, winds ease, allowing more efficient radiative cooling and therefore lower temperatures,” said MetService meteorologist Tui McInnes. “It certainly makes for a nippy morning for Saturday sports.”
“Beyond the chilly start to Saturday, clearer skies over the North Island will be a very welcome sight,” added McInnes, “an opportunity to finally get some washing dry!”
However, for the South Island, a front moving in during the latter part of Saturday and into Sundaywill bring more wet weather for western areas and windy conditions in exposed places. The front could bring snow to the usual places about the Alps and high country, while eastern areas will remain fine.
Finally, as we head into next week a low to the north of New Zealand brings rain and strong easterly winds to the top of the North Island.
