Turangi moving up the rankings
House prices remain strong in and around Turangi as people wake up to the fact that they can buy a mountain house, lake bach or fishing cottage in the Central North Island for significantly less than other holiday destinations, says Wai Johnson, owner of Century 21 Premier (Turangi).
Ms Johnson’s comments follow the release of the latest QV Property Report showing that while Turangi is the 6th least expensive regional town in New Zealand, median house values continue upwards following the Global Financial Crisis a decade ago.
In the last quarter alone Turangi’s median house value increased by 3.9% - one of the largest quarterly increases among all towns and suburbs nationwide. While in the year to 31 March, it increased by 14.6%.
“According to QV, Turangi’s median house value rose to $223,100 in the last quarter. We’ve still got houses for sale beneath that, but I suppose the big difference in the past 18 months is that more and more properties are now selling above that,” she says.
Ms Johnson says with Taupo house prices rising in recent years, many looking for a holiday house near Lake Taupo are now considering Turangi and the lifestyle it offers.
She says Turangi has also benefited from the country’s tourism boom with the area fast becoming a destination, with plenty of hospitality, accommodation and adventure tourism businesses now based there.
“As well as the nearby skiing, hiking, mountain biking, whitewater rafting, and boating, we’re of course also the ‘Trout Fishing Capital Of The World’ with the internationally regarded Tongariro River literally running right past us.”
She says Turangi’s central location has also been key to its revival, with the ongoing Waikato Expressway improvements and Transmission Gully now under construction only going to make the former hydro-electricity town closer to Auckland and Wellington.
“Now’s the time to buy in Turangi as it’s only popularity will only continue to increase.”
Century 21 New Zealand National Manager, Geoff Barnett, says Turangi is not alone in experiencing price rises.
“The latest QV figures reflect what we’re seeing across the country at the moment - that is many regions, in particular, continue to experience some really good price growth.
“The team at Century 21 in Turangi do a great job getting the listings and making the sales but it’s their efforts in the community, such as their annual fundraising events, that are also getting noticed and are making a real difference locally,” says Mr Barnett.
