One of New Zealand’s most celebrated citizens, inventor Sir Ray Avery today announces the launch of HEARTBEATS – an extraordinary campaign to save one million babies worldwide using a revolutionary incubator he’s created for communities most in need.

Now he needs your help …

Sir Ray needs to raise $4 million to build and supply 2000 LifePod incubators to hospitals and medical centres throughout the Pacific and developing countries over the next 24 months.

"Every year, three million babies around the world die in the first 28 days of their short lives. These deaths cause heart-wrenching grief to mothers and families,” says Sir Ray.

“Yet almost all of these deaths are preventable by placing the baby in a neonatal incubator, but current models can cost up to US$40,000 each and typically break down due to poor maintenance.”

LifePods purify their own air and water and run for 10 years without servicing and each incubator saving up to 500 little lives for a fraction of the price of existing incubators.

The campaign will culminate in a major fundraising event early next year, featuring an A-list international performer as well as some of New Zealand’s most celebrated talents. More details will be released in the coming days about this event.

“My vision is for LifePods to be as ubiquitous as the iPhone - wherever they need to be to save a life,” says Sir Ray. “If we were to follow the normal manufacturing and distribution process supplying incubators to those in need many babies will die so we have launched the Heartbeats Campaign to save a million children and give them a precious start to life.”

“I estimate that we’re born with approximately 30,000 days to live. I reckon I have about 5000 left and I want to make sure I do everything I can to make a difference in the world.

WHO IS SIR RAY AVERY

Sir Ray dragged himself up by his bootstraps, from a childhood in orphanages and foster homes, and living on the streets of London to become a scientist, businessman, Knight and passionate New Zealander.

Ray says: “I was lucky to have had such a challenging start to life. It made me fearless and fostered a social responsibility that is given to very few.”

He was named New Zealander of the Year 2010, most Trusted New Zealander 2011 and appointed a Knight Grand Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit which is the highest order of the New Zealand Knighthood honours.
“Science and technology has neglected the needs of the world’s underprivileged majority,” says Sir Ray. “I am committed to turning this around.”
