Council to look at traffic, parking and speed limits in bylaw reviews
Queenstown Lakes District Council has approved a review of its Traffic and Parking Bylaw and Speed Limit Bylaw at
today’s Full Council Meeting.
QLDC’s Traffic and Parking Bylaw will be reviewed to bring a consistent approach to traffic management and parking
across the district. A similar approach is being taken to the Speed Limit Bylaw.
Unprecedented and sustained growth has changed the way vehicles are being used across the district and these reviews
offer QLDC an opportunity to modernise, streamline and standardise the way parking, transport and speed limit
regulations are created and enforced.
QLDC Asset Planning Manager Myles Lind sees the reviews as a way of allowing Council to become more agile in the way we
deal with transport issues, which means QLDC can respond much faster to changes in the way our carriageways and parking
spaces are managed.
“Continued growth has seen an increase in congestion and associated challenges arising around parking – both in the
number of parks available, and vehicles being parked in unsafe and unsuitable spaces. The aim of this review is to
provide a better framework for the way we approach both traffic and parking, making for a better experience across the
board,” Said Mr Lind.
“Looking at the Speed Limit Bylaw at the same time gives us the opportunity to respond to resident concerns around speed
limits much more swiftly, which will see faster decisions in high growth areas.”
The bylaw reviews will begin this month, with issues and options to be reported back to Council in July/August this
year. Any decision to amend or replace the bylaws will be subject to public consultation.
