Tairawhiti Road Safety Week

Tairawhiti Road Safety Week
A series of community events to promote messages around restraints and distractions will be held as part of Tairawhiti Road Safety Week.
The week kicks off next Monday with a checkpoint where vehicles will be stopped to make sure people are wearing seatbelts and children are in the correct carseat or restraint.
Turanga Health and Plunket representatives will assist at the checkpoint, making sure children are in the right restraint for their size and that the restraint is bolted to the vehicle.
Anyone who requires follow up work will have several days to comply. A bolting clinic will be held for those who require fittings for their vehicles.
An event aimed at the trucking industry will take place at the Wainui weighbridge on May 10. Free coffee and food will be offered to drivers to reinforce the message ‘be fit for the trip.’
“This is educational rather than enforcement focused. It’s to provide education around reducing speed, distractions and fatigue,” says road safety educator Dianne Akurangi.
Information packs will be provided to drivers as well as mini health checks.
A video competition is also being run and local schools are invited to create a short film promoting road safety in Tairawhiti. The winning school will receive $1000 of Noel Leeming vouchers and a barbeque lunch for the entire school cooked by Mayor Meng Foon. Other prizes are available for each category.
Entries can be emailed to roadsafety@gdc.govt.nz by 12pm on Friday 4 May.
“If we can share these road safety messages with kids, then they can bring the message home to their families.”
The winners will be announced at a screening at the Odeon Theatre on 13 May starting at 4pm. This is a free community event with limited tickets available from Tairawhiti Roads - contact Dianne Akurangi.
Tairawhiti Road Safety Week runs from 7 May to 13 May.
