NZ Recreation Association applauds decision to reduce helicopter landings
A ruling that fewer tourist helicopters on scenic flights should be allowed to land on a remote Fiordland glacier has been applauded by the New Recreation Association.
NZ Rec Advocacy Manager, Sam Newton, said "The Ombudsman has made the right decision and we welcome it. Congratulations to the Federated Mountain Clubs for making a stand and doing the hard mahi.”
"It is increasingly hard to manage the demands of tourism and the recreational needs of New Zealanders. National Park Management Plans are where that balance is achieved and it is not okay to deviate from those plans, even on a ‘trial’ basis."
Mr Newton concluded "We are very happy that mountaineers and trampers will be able to enjoy some peace and quiet in a special part of the world.”
