“The changeable weather experienced by many this week is likely to continue into this weekend” April Clark MetService meteorologist said.

Parents hoping to take the kids outdoors this school holiday weekend should note that fronts embedded in the strong westerly flow currently over the country, will continue to bring showers to the west of the South Island and Southland on Friday. The North Island will stay a lot drier, with only a few showers forecast for the western coasts, most expected after dark.

On Saturday, a cooler airmass makes it way north over the South Island, spreading showers onto eastern areas with a few of these showers expected to become heavy for coastal regions from Southland right up to Christchurch. A showery Saturday is also expected over the west of the North Island. The Capital should escape the showers, with a generally fine but gusty Saturday forecast.

“Sunday is looking the pick of the week for good weather across the entire country,” Clark commented. “As winds turn southwest everywhere by Sunday afternoon, any remaining showers will clear for the majority of New Zealand. A perfect time to get outside and enjoy the Autumn sun or get that back-log of washing done,” Clark continued.

Temperatures are set to remain fairly typical for April, with urban centres (including the South Island) looking to keep above freezing right through to Sunday when the southwest flow and clear skies usher in chilly overnight temperatures for eastern regions.
