Palmerston North City Council Major Event Announcement
Palmerston North City Mayor, Grant Smith gave a glimpse of a thrilling new event his Council are planning for April 2019 to mark the end of the WW100 centenary celebrations.
The event takes place from 8-14 April 2019 and will incorporate an arena spectacular telling real stories about the homecoming of the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) personnel from WW1 in 1919 and incorporating a military tattoo element. The commemorative event will also feature an expo-style display accessible to the community and uniting all of New Zealand’s Defence Force.
“Palmerston North is the defence capital of New Zealand,” says Mayor Smith. “With Ohakea and Linton on our doorstep and the New Zealand Defence Force so close to our city, it makes sense for our city to host the New Zealand commemorations of our soldiers returning home. The council events team and the appointed contractor, Summit Events, involved will work closely with the Defence Force to bring together a world-class event that will delight and touch the hearts of every generation.”
In addition to the Arena shows, the New Zealand Defence Force will unite to display the evolution of the role of the New Zealand military over the past century in the form of an expo, providing a captivating insight.
There will also be opportunities for the whole community to get involved in events to be held in The Square and CBD the week leading up to the Central Energy Trust Arena shows and expo.
Experienced event management company, Summit Events, are contracted to manage the event on behalf of Council. Their team will engage with the local community in the months ahead about the many opportunities and capacities they can be involved with for this momentous event.
Event director, Craig Gallagher and his team have delivered the New Zealand Rural Games in the city for the last two years and he is excited about this new feature event for the city.
“Palmerston North is lucky with some of the country’s best event facilities and are great supporters of local events. This is another opportunity for the city to showcase its capabilities to host an event at an international standard,” says Mr Gallagher.
