Local leaders pleased with reprieve for Hutt bus services

HUTT CITY COUNCIL
NEWS RELEASE

Local leaders pleased with reprieve for Hutt bus services

Lower Hutt Mayor Ray Wallace has welcomed news of a temporary reprieve for the Airport Flyer, Wainuiomata, Stokes Valley and Upper Hutt commuter services, and says he will continue to work with NZ Bus on a long-term solution.

The Mayor, Cr Campbell Barry and MPs Chris Bishop and Ginny Anderson (pictured above) have all rallied the community to try and save the services after an announcement from NZ Bus earlier this year that they would not continue.

The ‘Save the Hutt Valley Airport Flyer Bus’ petition, started by Campbell Barry, received over 17,000 signatures, both online and collected.

A public meeting on public transport was held last Thursday, where it was announced the services will continue for the immediate future and be reviewed in 6 months.

Mayor Ray Wallace says good public transport is hugely important for Lower Hutt.

“We are growing, and projects like our soon to be completed Events Centre and the redevelopment of Fraser Park as a key sporting hub, will bring more people to our city for work and leisure activities.”

“Council officials are already working with NZ Bus to find a sustainable long-term solution, and it will continue to be a top priority for me and other local leaders.”
