How does the Sky Tower handle a lightning strike?

Following today’s media interest in the weather and the recent lightning strikes to the Sky Tower, please find below further information on how the tallest man-made structure in the Southern Hemisphere copes with lightning. Please feel free to use the below within your coverage.

The Sky Tower is fully equipped to withstand lightning and has one of the most advanced systems for tower protection.

The Sky Tower is fully earthed to prevent danger from lightning and there is a dynasphere on top of the mast to conduct lightning that is 50cm in diameter.

This system ensures the safety of guests within the tower, who, alongside the spectacular weather views, will only hear a thunder clap not the strike of lightning itself.

In 2017, the Sky Tower only recorded five lightning strikes.
