Firefighters respond to extreme weather in Taranaki and Ruapehu districts

Fire and Emergency New Zealand is responding to several callouts after a tornado and strong winds tore through parts of Taranaki and Ruapehu.

At least half a dozen houses have lost their roofs in a Tornado in Rahotu. Crews are also responding to several calls about downed power lines and toppled trees in the area.

An emergency operation centre has been set up at the local school hall.
At least five crews are responding in Rahotu, including crews from New Plymouth.
Meanwhile, several homes have been damaged by wind in National Park Village in Ruapehu. Three crews are at the scene.

Two crews are on their way from Whanganui. An Urban Search and Rescue Team has also been deployed.

Fire and Emergency’s central communications shift manager David Meikle says the 111 line has been incredibly busy this morning with weather related calls.
