Peter Posner World YMCA President has been on a tour of New Zealand. Mr. Posner has stopped off to officially open the YMCA’s Raise Up programme in Canons Creek,Porirua.
Mr. Posner is in New Zealand touring all the different associations. He has started in Christchurch, made his way to Nelson, Wellington and will be heading up to Wanganui and onto Auckland for the weekend. Whilst in Wellington Mr. Posner officially opened the YMCA Raise Up programme in Cannons Creek, Porirua.
Raise Up is a youth empowerment program that aims to empower young people to foster a sense of pride and respect for themselves and the communities in which they live in, through personal ownership and leadership development. Since the inception at YMCA Auckland in 2002, Raise Up has grown to provide opportunities for youth across Auckland communities and is now growing nationwide. YMCA Greater Wellington has 4 crews across Wellington, Upper Hutt, Masterton & now Porirua. Each location has a crew made up of self-referred young people from their local communities. Crews are tasked with identifying the needs of young people in their community and responding with events, workshops, activities and initiatives.
Mr. Posner said “It’s great to be here with a real YMCA. The work you guys do not only changes and improves lives but also saves them. The skills you are teaching young people go right back into the families and changes them and the community for the better”
Brendan Owens Greater Wellington YMCA CEO said “Having Peter here was a great opportunity for us to showcase the positive impact our programmes are having throughout the Wellington region. Peter officially opened our Cannons Creek Raise Up programme. This was incredibly special as we believe this programme will offer Canons Creek youth a great opportunity to develop and make a positive impact in their own community”
