Cheviot To Benefit From New Agrecovery Drop Off
The Cheviot Transfer Station will soon be equipped with a free, permanent drop-off point for the recycling of high density polyethylene (HDPE) plastic agrichemical containers.
Under the scheme, members of the public will be able to dispose of their HDPE containers including those which previously contained pesticides, veterinary medicines and agricultural chemicals. To be accepted, containers must be:
• No more than 60 litres in size, the lid removed and be made of HDPE plastic.
• Triple rinsed before being brought to the transfer station and free from chemical residue.
• Approved by the Agrecovery programme and from participating brand owners (visit www.agrecovery.co.nz for a full list of approved containers).
The council’s Waste Minimisation Team Leader, Sally Cracknell, says it will be great to have an Agrecovery drop-off point up and running in Cheviot to compliment the already well-established Culverden and Amberley drop-off points.
“The drop-off at our Culverden Transfer Station has been operational since late 2009 and has been very popular, receiving the equivalent of 22 shipping containers full of empty agricultural chemical containers that have been recycled”, she says.
The cost of recycling the agricultural containers is built into the purchase price, so providing the containers are from one of the scheme’s participating brand owners, members of the public will not be charged on site to recycle them.
Cheviot Ward Councillor, Vince Daly, says he is looking forward to seeing a drop-off in Cheviot as this is clearly a popular scheme within the district already.
“I’ve made use of the once a year service myself, but this new permanent service will give farmers across our area better options when it comes to disposing of their agricultural containers in a sustainable way, rather than storing them on our farms.”
The Agrecovery drop-off points form a key part of the Rural Waste Minimisation Project, that is all about collaborating to find ways for the rural community to better manage their farm waste, which the council is proud to be a part of. Further information will be posted on the council’s website.
