Weather over Easter
MetService is forecasting a typical autumnal weekend for Easter and the end of daylight saving.
With three frontal systems affecting the country through the weekend, many places will see some rain or showers,
especially Saturday and Monday. However, there will be plenty of dry weather, particularly in eastern areas to enjoy the
outdoors.
The fronts lose much of their energy as they move north, meaning southern and western parts of the South Island will
receive most of the precipitation.
“Places most likely to stay dry for the entire weekend are inland Marlborough and Wairarapa,” said MetService
meteorologist Gerrit Keyser.
The first front is currently over the North Island. It is slow moving and rain is expected to spread north with the
front, clearing by Friday morning. On Saturday, the second front reaches the South Island, quickly progresses over the
country, with most of the rain in the south and along the West Coast. It brings a few showers to the North Island, that
will clear overnight. Sunday looks to be the best day over the Easter weekend, with dry weather for nearly everybody. By
the evening, the third front reaches the country and brings rain to the southern and western parts of the South Island
overnight and through Monday while the North Island remains mainly dry.
“There is no rain in the forecast for the three nights that Ed Sheeran is performing in Dunedin,” said Keyser, “But on
Saturday, there are showers around during the day for those travelling to the concert.”.
