Karley waits for right time to start Cook Strait Challenge
Senior Sergeant Karley Hunt from New Plymouth in Taranaki has been left lamenting the windy conditions as she waits for the right time to make her attempt on swimming the Cook Strait.
“We are all set to go but the wind and tides are against us,” says Karley who is making the swim to raise money for the Central Blue Light charity which helps young people who are risk.
“We are now hoping for tomorrow or Monday but the prospects look slim and we may have to push out the attempt by two weeks– it will be a tough decision but we are being guided by the advice of experts.
“Cook Strait is one of the most dangerous stretches of water in the world and safety is a big issue – we’ve got to call it right,” she says.
Police Minister Stuart Nash met with Karley in his
Wellington office yesterday and praised her fund-raising
efforts.
“Our police force is made up of people who
get involved in their communities and set high standards by
personal example,” he says.
A final decision on whether
to swim tomorrow will be made early this evening.
