Public transport the way to go for Ed Sheeran concert
The Regional Council and Dunedin City Council have worked together on public transport options over the Easter weekend to help people attending the Ed Sheeran concerts to get from A to B.
A shuttle will connect the Octagon and the Stadium area before and after each concert. To help people travel to and from the city, several of the city’s standard bus routes will run until around 2am on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. An additional two special bus routes (‘northern suburbs’ and ‘southern suburbs’) will service most parts of town not covered by these routes, with last departures from the Octagon at 2.30am (southern suburbs) and 2.45am (northern suburbs). Mosgiel will be serviced by a train.
Easter Sunday is normally one of three days per year with no ORC-run buses running at all, but will have services on several routes this year running from mid-afternoon, as well as the two special routes (‘Northern suburbs’ and ‘Southern suburbs’). With no concert on Good Friday, it will be observed as usual (no ORC-run buses). Otago Heritage Bus Society is also running some special services over Easter weekend.
"The concerts are a major event for the city over a weekend when bus services are typically reduced” Sian Sutton, ORC Director Stakeholder Engagement says. “It’s anticipated there will be in excess of 100,000 people in the city for the concerts, so ensuring that people can travel to and from the events and around the city is a priority for ourselves and the DCC. This is not only for the convenience of concert-goers but also for the safety and convenience of local residents. The proposed services aim to ensure that as many concert-goers as possible can leave their vehicles at home if they choose to. We’re really excited to see our city attract an artist of this calibre and want to make this a positive experience for everyone involved.”
DCC General Manager Community Services Simon Pickford says, “We’re really pleased to be able to offer transport options which are flexible, convenient and affordable to get people from home to the concerts and back again.”
