Heavy rain causes surface flooding issues
Areas of the Kāpiti Coast have been impacted by a short burst of high-intensity rainfall this morning, with surface flooding causing disruption in a number of streets.
Nathan Avenue at Paraparaumu Beach was closed earlier this morning to prevent vehicles from pushing surface flooding down into low-lying properties, however, one property at the beach end of the street had already been inundated.
Kāpiti Coast District Council staff have been on-site since early this morning, assessing infrastructure and clearing a temporary channel around the stormwater outlet to help water levels drop quickly, and at this stage it doesn’t look like there will need to be any evacuations.
However, with high tide due at around 1.30 this afternoon and more rain in the forecast, sandbags have been delivered to at least one other property in the area as a precautionary measure. Sandbags are available for anyone living in flood-prone areas to collect from the Council depot in Fytfield Place, Paraparaumu.
People are also encouraged to ensure their drains are clear, and to call Council on 0800 486 486 if they have any issues or concerns.
