Council Allocates Creative Communities Funding
The Creative Communities Assessment Committee have approved the last round of funding under the 2017/18 Creative
Communities Scheme for five community initiatives. This totals $7150 amongst the five successful applicants.
The committee allocated $3000 of funding to Omihi and Greta Valley Schools to employ a Kapa Haka tutor to start up a new
Kapa Haka programme across the two schools. The Hawarden Waikari Community Trust was awarded $1150 to kick-start the
painting of a mural on a prominent Waikari water tank.
The Arts were a major focus of this round of funding, with Hanmer Springs band The Notables given $1000 for tutorials
for band members, and Lee Lawrence from Amberley also awarded $1000 to assist with running a school holiday music
program. A final $1000 was given to Alcohol Wise Hurunui Inc. to support the running of community dance lessons.
Councillor Julia Mclean says creative community funding is essential for the district as it allows small communities to
access vital funds to grow an interest or passion.
“The quality and range of applications was strong and in particular, it is pleasing to see children and young people
benefiting from the Arts and Kapa Haka programmes.”
“All the initiatives aim to engage, improve or pass on knowledge to members of our community and enrich our District. I
am personally looking forward to seeing the results and performances,” says Councillor Mclean.
The Creative Communities Scheme is a partnership between Creative New Zealand and local councils, with each council
taking responsibility for delivering the scheme in its area. The scheme supports and encourages local communities to
create and present diverse opportunities for accessing and participating in arts activities within their specific
geographical area.
