The inaugural Taupō Monster Bike Sale is set to hit Taupō during the April school holidays. Starting Saturday 14 April, Taupō’s five bike shops will be offering deals and discounts for the two-week duration of the holidays.

The sale is the collective initiative of Destination Great Lake Taupō (DGLT), Towncentre Taupō, Bike Taupō and local bike shops as part of a drive to promote cycling in the region. DGLT has focused its autumn marketing campaign on cycling, and the bike sale gives visitors another reason to travel to Taupō.

“Our region has such a huge variety of cycle trails for every riding ability, and our free-draining pumice soil means that great riding can be had year-round,” says Anna McLaren, marketing and communications manager for DGLT.

“Autumn is a great time to come and ride here, and the Taupō Monster Bike Sale means people can pick up a bargain or get that new bike they’ve always wanted, then head out for a ride on one of our great trails.”

Taupō’s five bike stores are all within easy walking distance, and with more than 33 brands of bikes on sale visitors won’t be short on options.

Town Centre Taupō general manager, Julie McLeod: “The fact that a town like Taupō has five thriving bike shops all within an easy walk of each other who are willing to collectively work together is testament to the bike culture in this place”

“This promises to be New Zealand’s biggest bike sale and we hope it will become a regular on the annual events calendar.”

Every purchase made at a Taupō bike shop during the two-week duration of the Monster Bike Sale allows entry into a draw to win a luxury cycling and adventure weekend in Taupō thanks to Whakaipo Lodge and Hukafalls Jet.

A second-hand bike sale will also be held on Saturday 21 April on the Tongariro Domain. Mrs McLaren says for a small fee, 100% of which will go towards Kids Bike Taupō, people will be able to bring their bikes along to sell.

“People can sell everything from road bikes to mountain bikes, BMX bikes and kids bikes. For those that have been thinking of upgrading their bike, this will be a great chance to not only cash up that old one but hunt for a preloved bargain.”

A kids Red Bike Treasure Hunt will also be running for the duration of the April school holidays. Children will be able to pick up a treasure hunt map from bike shops, participating retailers around Taupō CBD, and the Taupō i-SITE, with plenty of great prizes up for grabs.
