Council Event Gives Residents Much Needed Information
The Hurunui District Council’s Let’s Connect event was held last Tuesday night at the Waiau Hall.
Residents and ratepayers were invited to come along and hear updates from key organisations in the on-going
redevelopment of our communities’ earthquake-affected infrastructure and housing.
Attendees came to hear from the various local and central government agenciesthat were assembled.
These included the Hurunui District Council’s Community, Demolition & Waste and Building teams,North Canterbury Transport Infrastructure Recovery (NCTIR), Environment Canterbury (ECan) and
Work Safe NZ.
Hurunui District Council’s Community Team Leader, Rochelle Faimalo, says her team enjoys putting on these events as they
help our communities stay connected and updated on all of the work taking place in the district post-earthquake that
affects their day to day lives.
“The community were able to speak directly with organisations heavily involved in our ongoing recovery and had direct
access to the knowledge and insight of the staff of those organisations,” she says.
“NCTIR gave a well-received update of the massive amounts of work involved in restoring SH1 and the repair and upgrade
of Route 70 (Inland Road), and our council’s various teams were able to answer questions on a range of rebuild topics
affecting our residents.”
Mayor Winton Dalley says this was a great opportunity for property owners to hear key information and get progress
updates from important agencies involved in the redevelopment of the district’s key infrastructure and housing.
“It was great to see a significant number of residents interacting with the different organisations present that have
played, and will continue to play, such a key role in our district’s progress post-quake. From the conversations I had
with those who attended, I believe the value gained from the
event will be hugely positive.”
The Let’s Connect event was organised by the Hurunui District Council’s Community Team and was funded by grants from the
Department of Internal Affairs’ Lottery Hurunui, Kaikoura, and Marlborough Earthquake Relief Fund.
