Green is the Theme for Opening of Walkway
Stage 2 of the Denby Road walkway is complete and will be officially opened by South Taranaki Mayor, Ross Dunlop, as
part of a Family Fun Day on Sunday 18 March.
South Taranaki District Council group manager of engineering services, Brent Manning, says members of the public are
invited to attend the grand opening which starts at 1pm next to the Sandford’s Depot on Fairfield Road, Hawera.
“We want to make it a fun event for the whole family so we’ve chosen a theme, which is anything green. There’ll be
treats and prizes and a free BBQ being run by the Hawera Hockey Club. So get dressed up in your favourite green costume,
come along and bring your wheels – scooter, bike or buggy, or just your legs,” he says.
Manning says the new section of pathway (Te Araroa i te Huarahi o Denby) comes off the existing Denby Road pathway, runs
across farmland and connects with Fairfield Road.
“It effectively creates a loop from Denby Road to Fairfield and back onto Manawapou Road, with the long term goal of
linking up with Nowell’s Lakes. With a fine chip seal the pathway will be good for walkers, cyclists, joggers and for
people on mobility scooters,” he says.
Mayor Dunlop says the 1.7km pathway is just one of several pathways the Council is building as part of a District
Pathways Programme.
“The Pathways Programme is about Council creating safe and enjoyable places for people to walk or cycle in order to
enhance the lifestyle and recreational opportunities across the district. It’s a key element contributing to our
Council’s vision of making South Taranaki the most liveable District in New Zealand,” he says.
The opening will start at the Fairfield Road entrance at 1pm with a short blessing. Carparks will be available at
Sandford’s.
