Free Hazardous Waste Drop Offs For Residents

Following the success of previous hazardous waste collections and drop offs, the Hurunui District Council is offering residents the opportunity to dispose of their hazardous waste resulting from earthquake related demolition and renovation work at no charge.

The first drop off will be behind the Cheviot Service Centre & Library on Friday 16 March, 10am-midday followed by another in Waikari on Princes Street (adjacent to the council’s watermen’s shed) on the same day at 2-4pm. The final drop off will take place at the Culverden Transfer Station on Tuesday 20 March at 9-11am.

“This scheme takes the financial burden of disposing of hazardous waste away from residents,” says the council’s Waste Minimisation Team Leader Sally Cracknell.

“The fact that the public will have assistance from the council to dispose of hazardous waste that accumulates on their properties is a positive result for our communities at what is an already stressful time. We encourage residents to take up this opportunity” she says.

Residents can drop off any hazardous waste including gas bottles, light bulbs and tubes, paint, stains and solvents, household and garden chemicals, car and electric fencing batteries, and agrichemicals.

There is also the option of dropping off hazardous waste at the Amberley Transfer Station during normal opening hours available for those who cannot attend.

Hurunui District Council Chief Executive Hamish Dobbie says projects like these are incredibly beneficial to the district as they save ratepayers a hit in the back pocket during the already costly process of rebuilding or repairing their properties.

This initiative is being funded via the Ministry for the Environment’s earthquake waste management project. Residents can call 03 314 8816 to arrange for one of these free collections.
