Detour travellers urged to take some time to enjoy Ruapehu attractions
Travelers affected by the closure of the Desert Rd on Wednesday (7 March) are being encouraged to factor a bit more time
into their journey so that they can enjoy some of the sites and activities on the alternate route.
The Desert Rd will be closed for 36 hours on 7 March and 4 April from 7am to allow for repair work on the Waihohonu
Bridge meaning travellers will be detoured on State Highways (SH) 46, 47, 4 and 49.
Ruapehu Mayor Don Cameron said that taking your time on long trips is always good safe driving advice and in this case
people can also take the opportunity to enjoy some of the most iconic scenery and attractions the volcanic plateau has
to offer.
“The detour route takes people around the world heritage listed Tongariro National Park, past the Chateau Tongariro
Hotel, Mt Ruapehu ski areas, National Park Village and Ohakune - all offering a great variety of things to see and do.
The alternate route then joins back up with SH1 at the impressive National Army Museum in Waiouru.
People looking to have a break can enjoy a scenic chairlift ride at Whakapapa, a short walk in the National Park, a
round of mini-golf, or a coffee and something to eat at one of the many great cafés or restaurants along the way.
This includes cafés boasting breathtaking views of Mt Ngauruhoe and Tongariro National Park, a high tea at the Chateau,
or drop by one of the numerous cafés and restaurants in National Park Village or Ohakune.
Mayor Cameron added that people travelling to Auckland could also consider travelling on SH4 through Taumarunui.
“This would allow them to experience Forgotten World Adventures rail cart journey on the old Ohura to Stratford railway
line, take an exciting jet boat ride on the Whanganui River or if they have a bit more time some golf at the renowned
Tarrangower Golf Course,” he said.
