SH1 through Mangamuka Gorge to close again for resurfacing
The new road surface on State Highway 1 through the Mangamuka Gorge
State Highway 1 through the Mangamuka Gorge is to close for the second round of resurfacing work, starting tomorrow.
The closures will follow the same timetable as last weekend, starting at 8:30am on Saturday and continuing over the following three days, says the Transport Agency’s System Manager Steve Mutton.
Road closed:
Saturday, 3 March, Sunday 4 March, Monday 5 March and Tuesday 6 March.
On each day, the road will be:
Closed at 8:30am
Open 4pm – 5pm
Closed 5pm – 8pm.
This should allow anyone travelling south to the Northland Fieldays in Dargaville time to get through in the morning and plan their journey home again. It also means people using the road for school, work and freight can plan ahead.
There will be a detour in place via State Highway 10 between Awanui and Pakaraka. The detour will add about 10 kilometres to a one way journey.
The Transport Agency urges motorists to plan their journey, allow extra time and follow the detour road signs. When SH1 is reopened, keep to the posted speed limits to give the new road surface a chance to set.
Road users will have already noticed the difference the works have made when travelling through the Gorge this week. The work is running to schedule and most of it should completed by the end of the last closure on Tuesday, depending on the weather, says Mr Mutton.
“Motorists who don’t use the detour and choose to find their own way are reminded to drive with extreme care as some local roads may have uneven surfaces, minor slips or been damaged by recent bad weather in Northland,” says Mr Mutton.
The Transport Agency apologises for any inconvenience while we carry out this important safety and maintenance work.
