Airport welcome for international cricket teams

Dunedin (Thursday, 1 March 2018) – Dunedin residents are being encouraged to turn out to welcome the BLACKCAPS and England cricket teams when they arrive on Sunday for next week’s One Day International.

The England team arrives at 2.40pm and the New Zealand team at 5.30pm on Sunday at the Dunedin International Airport.

The Dunedin City Council is encouraging fans to get dressed up and head out to the airport to welcome both teams.

The King’s and Queen’s High Schools’ Kapa Haka group, He Waka Kōtuia, will welcome the teams and the City of Dunedin Pipe Band will pipe the players through the terminal.

Mayor of Dunedin Dave Cull says, “Both teams have shown some tremendous form in the 50-over format this summer, so I’m sure the Dunedin and visiting public will enjoy another great contest on 7 March.”

Residents who enter a ‘dress up your mailbox’ competition are in to win a family prize pack, which includes a family ticket to the one day international, to be held at the University of Otago Oval on Wednesday, 7 March. The pack also includes dinner out and supporter t-shirts.

People can pick up a starter kit of balloons, posters and crepe paper from the DCC Customer Services Centre in the Civic Centre and unleash their creativity. Email your contact details and a photo of your decorated mailbox to events@dcc.govt.nz by 12 noon on Monday. The winner will be notified on Tuesday.
