Vector Lights will transform the Auckland Harbour Bridge for Lantern Festival – celebrating the Year of the Dog

It’s not every day a dog is seen chasing a ball along the Auckland Harbour Bridge – but thanks to the creative technology behind Vector Lights this is exactly what’s going to happen during the Auckland Lantern Festival.

From Thursday to Sunday, at 30 minute intervals from 8:30pm to midnight, Auckland’s Waitemata Harbour will come to life with a spectacular three minute solar energy light and sound show on the Harbour Bridge to mark the festival.

This is the first time the bridge has been lit for the festival, and to mark the Year of the Dog, a special animation of a dog has been created as part of the show, along with spectacular lighting effects – utilising 90,000 LED lights – pulsing across the bridge with vibrant reds and golds associated with Chinese New Year.

Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development (ATEED) General Manager Destination, Steve Armitage, says Vector Lights has provided a new and innovative platform to mark the events taking place in the city.

“Visitors and Aucklanders have given Vector Lights glowing reviews since it was launched as part of Auckland’s Anniversary Weekend celebrations, and with each new light show we’ve been able to showcase more and more of the creative capabilities this installation offers,” he says.

“For the Lantern Festival, and to mark the significance of it being the Year of the Dog, we wanted to create something that would reflect the energy and exuberance of dogs, and hopefully inspire Aucklanders to be more resourceful and agile with their use of our energy resources.”

A vast array of activity is taking place throughout the Domain during the festival; the incredible illumination of hundreds of handmade Chinese lanterns, food stalls selling Asian delicacies, arts and crafts, live music, martial arts and performance.

Vector will also have a marquee in the Domain as part of the festival where Vector Lights can be viewed through a live stream, and visitors will have the chance to play with a solar powered robot dog to make him bark and wag his tail. The whole stand will be powered from an electric vehicle.

“Powering our stand from an electric vehicle demonstrates a new technology which, in the future, will give consumers more choice and control of how they store and use energy,” says Vector Chief Executive Simon Mackenzie.
