Murder of trans woman heartbreaking – says Gender Equal NZ
Gender Equal NZ says news that Wellington Police have arrested and charged a man with murder in relation to the death of trans woman Zena Campbell is “heartbreaking”.
National Council of Women (NCWNZ) Gender Equal spokesperson Dr Gill Greer, says the murder is an example of the kind of transphobic violence directed towards trans people and particularly trans women.
She says murders of trans women are common around the world and it’s horrifying to see this kind of violence and discrimination in New Zealand.
“We want to see all genders safe from violence. We need to find ways to eliminate the discrimination, stigma and exclusion many trans people face when doing everyday things such as going to work, going to the doctor or trying to find somewhere to live.
“The Human Rights Commission highlighted some of these issues in a report back in 2008 but we’ve not made enough progress in the past ten years.
“We know trans people experience high levels of violence of all kinds; trans young people are more likely to be bullied at school, and more likely to attempt self-harm and suicide. We want to see a more inclusive New Zealand society where all genders are treated equally.”
Dr Greer says Gender Equal NZ sends its condolences to Zena's family and friends, particularly the trans community in Wellington.
