State of Emergency lifted, but keep boiling water.

New Plymouth Mayor Neil Holdom this morning announced the lifting of the State of Emergency declaration that has been in place for New Plymouth district since Wednesday.

There is still a lot of work to be done to restore full services to the region and Mayor Holdom says it is critically important that every resident in the affected area continue to boil all water that will be directly consumed or will be used in the preparation of food.

“Our teams from New Plymouth District Council has worked tirelessly to repair the damage caused to the district’s water system following ex-Cyclone Gita,” Mayor Holdom says.

“As of 2am this morning, the final properties impacted by damage to our water pipe now have water. I am confident that we have enough water for emergency services like firefighting, and the maintenance of public safety.

“Even though we are no longer in a state of emergency, the boil water notice will in place until we have been able to consistently demonstrate the quality of water is up to scratch.

“It’s really important that we all take this notice seriously.”

Mayor Holdom says the storm has showcased the resilience of the Taranaki region.

“I want to pay tribute to the countless volunteers, the amazing Red Cross teams, our Council staff, Powerco and the team at the Taranaki District Health Board, whose support in explaining the importance of the boil water notice has been incredibly important.

“This has been a great response and I also want to thank the Taranaki Civil Defence team and those people from other areas of New Zealand who have given their time and expertise to assist us.

“Finally – thank you to the people of this city and the region. This has not been an easy time but you have looked after each other, you have been patient and you have been resilient.

“These have been trying times and there is still much to do, but these times have shown the true spirit of our community,” Mayor Holdom says.
