Cyclone Gita - Update 001

As Cyclone Gita continues its path towards the South Island there is an increasing number of incidents occurring in the
Nelson Tasman Region. There has been significant rainfall in the Takaka catchment, and strong winds are affecting the
Golden Bay region.
As at 6:00 pm:
• SH60 Riwaka to Takaka is closed due to a slip and fallen trees.
• Areas are without power (approx 4000 people). Between Kina and Takaka, including Kaiteriteri.
• Localised flooding in Motueka, Takaka and Marahau
• Rivers feeding Takaka catchment have received significant rainfall, with potential for significant flooding in
Takaka township.
• Significant flooding in the Riwaka Plains area.
• The Motueka Recreation Centre has been set up as a Civil Defence Centre, and people can self-evacuate to this
area if they are concerned for their safety.
• The Salvation Army Hall (Rutherford Street) in Nelson has been set up as a Civil Defence Centre, and people can
self-evacuate to this area if they are concerned for their safety.
• The Takaka Recreation Centre has been set up as a Civil Defence Centre, and people can self-evacuate to this
area if they are concerned for their safety.
• The Outdoor Recreation Centre in Marahau has been set up as a Civil Defence Centre, and people can self-evacuate
to this area if they are concerned for their safety.
We ask that people keep off the roads, and stay indoors. Emergency Services are in the affected areas, and are being
assisted by NZ Defence Force and NZ-RT2.
