Following the devastation caused by Cyclone Gita in the Pacific, forecasters are closely watching the path of the
Cyclone as it tracks towards New Zealand.
Current predictions show that the Cyclone may track over the lower North Island/Upper South Island on Tuesday. Although
it may lessen in severity, it could still bring with it strong winds, heavy rain and storm surges. Forecasters are
warning that this may be a significant weather event.
As Nelson Tasman has been impacted in February by two previous storm events, we are recommending that residents are
prepared should this event continue to track as forecast.
If residents were previously flooded in either of the last two events, then we strongly encourage you to take
precautions to protect your property. Tasman District Council and Nelson City Council do not provide sandbags, and so
residents are recommended to make their own arrangements.
Campers, mariners and other people who live and work along the coast, should pay particular attention to forecasts and
prepare accordingly.
It is also a good reminder for residents to make sure their emergency supplies and plans are up to date. Go to http://www.nelsontasmancivildefence.co.nz/get-ready/get-ready-at-home/ for more information.
