Light show to replace fireworks for Chinese New Year
Dunedin (Wednesday, 14 February 2018) – A light and sound show will replace a fireworks display when Dunedin celebrates Chinese
New Year on Friday evening.
A fire ban across the city means the planned fireworks display at the Dunedin Chinese Garden cannot be held.
Dunedin City Council Manager Community Development and Events Joy Gunn says, “The fire ban has been put in place to
protect people and property and it’s important we act responsibly and avoid creating any fire risks.
“We have heard the ban may be reviewed on Friday, but due to the organisation that goes into such an event, an
alternative to fireworks has been put in place.
“We realise some people will be disappointed by the decision, but we’re very pleased that we will be able to provide an
alternative. A four-minute, synchronised light and sound piece will provide a great finale for the Chinese New Year
celebrations.”
Ms Gunn says it’s also a timely reminder that private fireworks should not be used at home or in neighbourhoods if the
fire ban remains in place.
The Chinese Garden will provide the focal point for the evening’s festivities to welcome in the Year of the Dog.
Special guests at the event will include Christchurch-based Chinese Consul-General Zhijian Wang.
The evening’s entertainment will begin in the Octagon at 6.30pm with a performance from O-Taiko, Dunedin’s taiko
drumming ensemble.
One of the highlights, the lively traditional Dragon Parade, will leave the Octagon at 7.15pm and head to the Chinese
Garden via the Exchange. It will be followed by a welcome from Mayor of Dunedin Dave Cull and a response from the
Consul-General. A representative from the Office of Ethnic Communities will also speak.
The Chinese Garden will open to the public from 7pm, with entry by gold coin donation.
Plenty of food will be available from stalls outside the Garden. Musical and cultural performances will take place in
the Garden car park throughout the evening, with the light and sound display at 10pm.
