Pleasant Point reservoir starts to rise

Pleasant Point’s new half million dollar reservoir is taking shape on the edge of town and will provide a more secure water supply for the town.

The reservoir is a major part of a wider upgrade of water infrastructure in the town, which between now and 2022 will also see renewals to water mains throughout Pleasant Point. This will ensure a better, more resilient water service as well as significantly reducing water wasted through leakages.

Grant Hall, Drainage and Water Manager at Timaru District Council said that, it was good to see the reservoir taking shape on site.

“The reservoir will finally ensure that that town has a significantly larger supply of water at hand in case of any supply issues or emergencies, it effectively means we have three days supply of water stored on top of people’s on site storage, as opposed to about three hours.

“We’re progressively replacing the old piping with more modern and resilient PVC pipes, as well as extending the capacity of the network so that we can work on the system without closing down whole sections of the town supply,” he said.

Loss of water and low pressure caused by leakages was beginning to be a problem for the town.

The well draining soil conditions in Pleasant Point, where water rarely surfaces as it would in other places, made it difficult to identify where the problems were.

The reservoir is constructed from a special glass fused to steel material, which is chemically inert, long lasting and resistant to UV-light. The reservoir was shipped in pieces from the UK to be assembled on site at Pleasant Point.

“It’s great to see the reservoir panels arrive and begin to take shape on site,” said Grant.

“Once the reservoir is together it will be sealed and tested before sterilization and commissioning. It’s a major step in our plans to supply an improved water supply to everyone in Pleasant Point.”

With the reservoir and pipe upgrades throughout the town, residents will in future be offered the opportunity to connect directly to the water system, bypassing the water tanks the old system required.
