Update Two: Weather event Nelson Tasman
1700 hrs
1 February 2018
The high tide has now passed and the weather is forecast to ease overnight, however, another king tide is expected tonight at 11.30pm. It is not expected to be at the same levels – though people should still be prepared.
Some roads have now reopened while some remain closed as they are cleared and checked for damage. Please check both the Nelson City Council and Tasman District Council Facebook pages for updates as they come to hand.
Civil Defence Centres have been set up at:
Collingwood Area School – open overnight
Mapua – Hill Community Church – open overnight
Monaco – Honest Lawyer – to be determined if required.
If people are concerned about inundation tonight, they should stay with friends or family in the first instance, otherwise please contact their closest Civil Defence Centre.
Rocks Road (SH6) has now reopened to vehicles with a 30km/hr restriction in place. However, it has not reopened to cyclists or pedestrians. Damage to the seawall, footpath and cycle lane and other structures on the seaward side make it likely that it will remain closed to pedestrians and cyclists for a longer period.
Both the Glenduan and Monaco areas will be restricted to residents access only for now.
Note: There is potential for sewage contamination in flood waters, rivers and the sea. Please keep clear of these areas until notified.
With another king tide due late this evening everyone is urged to take extra care and avoid travelling in low-lying tidal areas tonight unless absolutely necessary.
