Council to reward recycling champions
Small efforts towards recycling have a big impact on reducing waste sent to landfill, resulting in a cleaner and greener city.
Across Palmerston North, thousands of residents are diligently recycling through the city’s kerbside recycling service. Palmerston North City Council is to reward and celebrate its city’s recycling champions.
“There are people consistently doing the right thing with their recycling - we want to recognise their efforts. By doing this, we hope it will encourage a wider behavioral change to recycle right.” Behavioral Change Coordinator Samantha Battman says.
Massey University graduate, Claire Bullock has spent the summer at Council as an Environmental Sustainability student and has led out the recycling champion project.
“We have wanted to run this project for a while. Claire working here as an intern provided a wonderful opportunity for both her and Council to get the project off the ground,” Ms Battman says.
Ms. Bullock has developed a tag that will be randomly placed on bins of residents who have been spotted correctly recycling - this means putting the correct and clean items in the recycling bin. Each month, those receiving a tag can go into the draw to win a $50 grocery voucher.
“Putting only the accepted items into your recycling bin has a positive impact on the overall recycling process. This means staff manually sorting the recycling can work in a safe environment. If materials can be easily separated and diverted from landfill then we can all contribute to a cleaner and greener environment.”
