30 January 2018

Council propose trial to allow dogs in CBD as part of Dog Control Policy Review

Palmerston North City Council is expecting a wide range of submissions on a proposed 12 month trial of dogs on-leashes being allowed in the central business district.

The proposed trial is one of the changes up for consideration as part of the Dog Control Policy Review.

Other key proposed changes are to:

• Allow dogs on-leash onto grass sports fields when fields are not in use for sport.

• Change Aokautere walkways from dog exercise areas to dog on-leash areas.

New sections to the Policy are also proposed, to explain the overall context for dog control and the rationale for dog control areas. The responsibility of dog ownership is also clearly stated.

Council is inviting feedback on recommended changes.

The draft policy and online submission form is available from: pncc.govt.nz/yourcouncil/consultations/draft-dog-control-policy

All submissions must be in by 4pm Friday 2 March.

Hearings are proposed to take place around April. Submitters are welcome to speak to their submission.
