Kawarau Gorge Road, State Highway 6: reconstruction work to end of March
People who use the road between Cromwell and Queenstown, State Highway 6, may experience delays between Cromwell and Roaring Meg from this Monday, 29 January.
“Significant road maintenance work in the Kawarau Gorge will begin on Monday, which should be completed by the end of March,” says John Jarvis, Senior Network Manager, NZ Transport Agency. “People will need to build in some extra time for their journey to the end of March.”
The works include removing the safety barrier (guardrail) temporarily, drainage improvements and road widening to allow for 1.6 km of highway to be stabilised and resealed.
“We need to remove the safety barrier to allow for the stabilisation to be completed, so we would like to make everyone aware of this work, ask everyone to build in extra time and that people travel at the temporary speed limits for their own safety and the safety of others,” says Mr Jarvis.
The contracting team will aim to keep delays to under 20 minutes during peak hours.
The Transport Agency thanks everyone for their patience and for taking care while this important maintenance work is completed.
