Roadshow on water management coming to you!
A family-friendly roadshow around South Canterbury will give people the chance to have their say on future water
management – including drinking water, recreation and water use on farms.
The Orari-Temuka-Opihi-Pareora Water Zone Committee’s draft recommendations – the result of two years of meetings,
scientific research and engagement with the community - were released for public consultation in December 2017. During
January and February 2018, ten community roadshow events will be held around South Canterbury to give local people the
chance to learn more about the recommendations, ask questions and give feedback. Fun activities will be provided for
children.
Chair of the committee, John Talbot, said he was looking forward to hearing feedback from the community on the
committee’s proposals to achieve environmental, cultural, social and economic benefits from the region’s water.
“We know the expectations we have for our water quality and quantity but now we’re looking at how we go about achieving
these in a balanced way. We’ve made more than 100 recommendations focusing on drinking water, recreation, water use on
farms, mahinga kai food gathering, cultural sites, waterway life and native plants.
“We would love people to come along to one of our roadshows and let us know what they think.”
Feedback from the roadshows will be considered by the Water Zone Committee before the recommendations are finalised and
presented to Environment Canterbury in March.
