Spearhead Leaders returns to Upper Hutt in 2018

Applications are now open for a brand new group of young people to join the Spearhead Leaders crew for 2018.

UPPER HUTT, Wellington NZ, 19 JAN 2018—Upper Hutt City Council and Upper Hutt Community Youth Trust have once again joined forces to facilitate Spearhead Leaders, a programme designed to develop the leadership skills and potential of our youth and empower the youth voice in the city.

Spearhead Leaders 2018 has been co-designed by young people for young people and builds on the success of the 2017 initiative. The nine-month programme begins on 23 March 2018 and consists of a 3-day adventure ‘boot camp,’ leadership mentoring, meeting local leaders, fun activities, and designing, planning and executing a youth led project in the city. It is a collaborative project between Council and Upper Hutt Community Youth Trust with support from Ministry of Youth Development.

“Spearhead Leaders was designed as a response to young people and the community telling us that youth wanted to have a voice and be supported to lead in our city,” says Upper Hutt’s Mayor, Wayne Guppy. “The young people involved last year gave us a valuable insight into what it’s like to be a young person growing up in Upper Hutt. As a consequence of their wisdom, enthusiasm, successes and personal development we have committed to Spearhead Leaders for another year, offering a new group of young people the opportunity to participate.”

Council’s continued support of this successful project is a commitment to youth development and community wellbeing as key elements contributing to Upper Hutt’s city vision.

“What a time Spearhead Leaders was!” says AJ Wheatley about participating in the 2017 programme. “It’s built up my confidence and leadership skills so much. The adventure camp and event planning were great fun. I also got to meet and talk to local leaders, my favourite being Patrick Gower and overall I had a fabulous time. I highly recommend applying.”

The Spearhead Leaders programme is limited to 15 places and it is free to participate. Applications are now open and close on 20 February 2018. The selection panel is looking for applicants from all backgrounds and life experiences. Any Upper Hutt young person, aged from 13 – 18, who has a desire to lead and be heard should apply at www.spearheadleaders.org.nz
