Life-size ‘robots’ deliver meals in a first for Auckland’s Movies and Music in Parks

The food delivery robots are coming.

New Zealand’s largest online food delivery service, Menulog, is giving Aucklanders a taste of the future with the launch of two transformer-like robot suits at Auckland Council’s Movies and Music In Parks this summer.

In a first for Auckland, those attending Movies and Music in Parks will be able to order food from select local restaurants via the Menulog app and have it hand delivered by a Menubot or pick it up from the Menulog marquee.

Menulog NZ Commercial Director, Paul Dodds, says the Menubots are a fun way to bring the service Menulog provides to life as well as being a nod to what the future of food delivery will look like.

“We deliver the widest range of cuisines and meals to Kiwis and advancements in technology in recent years has helped grow the local online food delivery market in New Zealand and around the world.

“With the steady rise of Artificial Intelligence and robotics it’s not too far away from a time when actual robots will be the ones delivering food to our door steps.”

Menulog is part of global food delivery giant JustEat which has trialled robot delivery in Britain with great success. It made more than 1,000 deliveries with 10 robots over a nine month period last year.

Food delivery will start this weekend at the screening of La La Land at Mairangi Bay Park on January 19 and at Kids Music in the Park on January 20 at Coyle Park in Point Chevalier.
Menulog restaurants delivering to the event in Mairangi Bay are Mad Mex, Oceanz Seafood, Apollo Turkish Bar and Grill, and Bombay Post. In Point Chevalier for Kids Music in the Park families can order from Mad Mex, Chicken Republique, and City Pizza.

To order, those attending the events can download the Menulog app, type in the address of the park, click on one of the participating delivery restaurants, order your meal and add the name of the event into the delivery notes, and they receive a SMS with an estimated delivery time and another SMS when the food arrives.

Over the summer Menulog and its local restaurant partners will deliver to eight Movies in Parks screenings and four Music in Parks events, including Demon Energy Rock the Park in Grey Lynn and Demon Energy Summer Jam in Manukau, which both attract more than 20,000 music fans and families.

Menulog will also be giving away Air Loungers at each event to the first 200 people who show the Menulog app on their phone. Those attending can also share a photo of their dinner on Instagram #menuloginthepark to be in to win a $40 Menulog voucher.

Mr Dodds says with more than 500 Auckland restaurants on the Menulog platform it has a focus on helping local restaurants grow their businesses.

“Movies and Music in Parks is about getting out into communities in all corners of Auckland. For families, and those attending, having food delivery to the site makes rolling up to these events even easier.

“These events also give our restaurant partners the chance to showcase their food to locals and visitors to the area. For the concert series, the convenience of having food delivered means people don’t need to miss a minute of their favourite movies and performers.”
