Public Support for a Ban on Rodeos in NZ
Continues to Grow
A second protest against the rodeo, within the first week of the New Year, is going ahead today.
The group, the Animal Justice League, is hosting their first protest of the year today to send a message to the government - they want to see a full ban on rodeos in NZ.
This comes after the largest protest against rodeo in NZ event, which had over 100 people attending. The protest was held on the 1st of January outside Warkworth Rodeo by Direct Animal Action.
“While we are thrilled that a Private Members Bill that will ban the worst aspects of rodeo - calf roping and flank straps, has been introduced to parliament, it isn’t enough to protect all animals used in rodeos,” said Holly Button from the Animal Justice League NZ.
“Every year the same patterns with rodeo are occurring, there are consistent breaches of the Rodeo Code of Welfare, people and animals are at high risk of being hurt, and public outcry increases as more and more protest occur around the country,” added Miss Button.
“The opposition to rodeos is growing quickly in NZ. Not only are we meant to be a world leader in animal welfare but are a nation of animal lovers so it makes sense that this kind of behaviour towards animals won't be tolerated by the public,” said Miss Button.
“Rodeos are animal abuse; they are not entertainment. We are hoping that the new Labour-led Government will do what the last Government wouldn’t do - listen to the public and implement a full ban on rodeos in NZ,” Miss Button stated.
Members of the Animal Justice League are inviting members of the public to join them at their protest on Saturday 6th January 2018, 10.15-11.45pm outside the Mandeville Sports Club 431 Mandeville Road.
