Rangers Descend on Masterton

RANGERS DESCEND ON MASTERTON

Rangers from throughout New Zealand and overseas will be descending on Masterton and its surrounds this week to take part in an exciting camp and challenging outdoor adventures.

The Rangers will be attending Flight 2018, GirlGuiding New Zealand’s Ranger Event in Masterton, from 5 to 12 January 2018.

Flight 2018 is an eight-day event for young women, aged 12½ to 18, from around New Zealand and overseas. There will be 305 girls and 102 volunteers (leaders) attending, including international participants from Australia, Malaysia and Singapore.

While on site at Rathkeale College, Rangers will take part in various activities including rafting, STEM projects, flying fox and advocacy projects.

After three days at Rathkeale, the girls will pack up and head out in adventure groups to the Wairarapa, Picton, Wellington, Taupo and Hawke’s Bay. While on adventures, girls sleep out in tents and cook their own meals over gas cookers.

Each adventure develops a different set of skills and girls have chosen the one that appeals most to them.

Wairarapa activities include 4-wheel driving, a visit to Mt Bruce, gliding and a three-day tramp through the Tararua Ranges. Other adventures include, kayaking the Abel Tasman, working with Weta Workshop, and volunteering with DOC on Somes Island.

“The committee and their teams have put in place an amazing event that will encourage the girls to ‘take flight’ and to challenge their limits, says Joe Tyler-Cole, Volunteer Chair of the Flight 2018 Organising Committee, GirlGuiding New Zealand.

“The girls grow and learn from these experiences by testing their abilities and working cooperatively, all supported by our volunteer leaders.”
