Protect Karangahake welcomes government initiative

Protect Karangahake welcomes and is encouraged by the new government’s position on the conservation estate. Chair,
Duncan Shearer says “The new conservation minister Eugene Sage is sending the right message to the mining industry by
declaring the conservation estate is for enjoyment by all New Zealanders - not the profiteering and polluting industries
like gold mining.”
“The expansion of the Hauraki Rail Trail in this region highlights our communities move away from the old, destructive
industries of gold mining and towards a more profitable and ecologically sound future.”
Protect Karangahake acknowledges that New Talisman does hold a current resource consent to bulk sample, but still
requires a traffic management plan before it can start this stage of operations. Shearer says “Our council and Mayor are
opposed to the idea of Karangahake Mountain being turned into an active gold mine, likewise our communities are opposed.
We’re here to make sure New Talisman hear our voices and cease their operations on Karangahake”
